EXPLOITING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) TO ENHANCE HUMAN CAPABILITIES

Today's smart machines (artificial intelligence) are better able to recognize patterns, perform rules-based analysis from very large amounts of data, and solve structured and unstructured problems than people. But instead of replacing people, how can we exploit smart machines to enhance human capabilities?

How can we use smart machines as tools, assistants, collaborators and coaches? How can we prepare ourselves and our organizations to do so? And how can we leverage smart machines and people to transform business processes and industries?

Professor Haluk Demirkan of the University of Washington has researched these questions and identified early examples of successful collaboration between people and smart machines to create and enhance products and services, while reducing costs. He will share these examples and explore ways to exploit smart machines at the June 13th-14th Advanced Practices Council (APC) meeting in the Boston area.

Other meeting topics include:

- Governance of predictive analytics (Michael Goul, Arizona State University.

After sharing an evolving framework for governing predictive analytics that includes the analytics of things, Professor Goul will explore the role of the CIO in delivering analytics of things innovations.

- IT megatrends that are transforming industries (Lynda Applegate, Harvard Business School)

Professor Applegate will share results of the Delphi study she conducted for the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council (Mass TLC). After Professor Applegate identifies the top IT mega trends that are transforming industries, APC members will use her tool to explore how these megatrends will transform their organizations and industries and, most important, how they can lead their organizations toward competitive advantage with these insights. Members of the Mass TLC will join in the exploration.

- Building capability advantage (Ananth Raman, Harvard Business School)

Using the Essent case study, Professor Raman will explore the role of the CIO in integrating operations using lean manufacturing to drive operational excellence.

- Competing in the age of digital ubiquity (Karim Lakhani, Harvard Business School)

Using the GE case study, Professor Lakhani and Rick McCullough, GE's Vice President of Software, will describe how connections, sensors and data are revolutionizing business. Visit to MIT Media Lab.

The June 13th and 14th APC event is sure to be like no other APC event in the past. If you are interested in joining the Advancing Practices Council or want to attend the event as a guest, please contact us.

We hope you can join along with 30-40 CIOs and senior IT executives from the world's largest companies.
